AI Search Ads

AI Search Ads are paid placements that appear alongside AI-generated answers in AI search experiences such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Unlike traditional search ads attached above or below a list of links, they are rendered in the context of a conversational answer—below or inside it—with a clear "Sponsored" label.

Unlike traditional search ads attached above or below a list of links, they are rendered in the context of a conversational answer—below or inside it—with a clear "Sponsored" label.

Why It Matters

As the place where users get answers shifts from search results pages to AI responses, ad inventory is moving with it. In Google Search, where zero-click search is now the norm, ads appeared in 25.5% of AI Overview results in Q1 2026—roughly a fourfold increase from about 5% a year earlier. Advertising is becoming a default component of AI answers, which means marketers now have to plan for both tracks at once: paid placements and organic citations inside the same answer surface.

Where the Platforms Stand

OpenAI (ChatGPT): OpenAI officially announced ad testing in January 2026 and began showing ads beneath answers to US Free and Go tier users in February. The rollout moved quickly to self-serve: on May 5, 2026, OpenAI opened an Ads Manager beta to all US advertisers with no minimum spend, supporting CPC bidding plus a Conversions API and pixel-based measurement. On May 7, the pilot expanded to South Korea, Japan, the UK, Mexico, and Brazil. OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers themselves.

Google: Alongside expanding ads in AI Overviews, Google is testing ads in Google AI Mode. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026, it unveiled four Gemini-built, AI-native ad formats: Conversational Discovery ads that generate answer-style creative tailored to the user's question, Highlighted Answers that surface high-quality ads as recommendations inside list-style responses, AI-powered Shopping ads with Gemini-written explainers on why a product fits, and Business Agent for Leads, a chat-based lead-capture format.

Naver: Korea's largest search portal saw follow-up question clicks grow roughly tenfold after launching AI Briefing in March 2025. It plans to test answer-style ads that recommend products and places inside AI Briefing in Q2 2026, with full-scale monetization in the second half of the year.

What It Means for GEO

AI search ads occupy labeled, paid inventory; the organic citations that GEO targets are woven into the answer itself. With both now sharing the same screen, three things follow. First, as ad prices rise, the relative value of organic citations—earned without media spend—increases. Second, citation slots cannot be bought; they are won only through content quality, structure, and trust signals. Third, monitoring which ads appear against a given question is a useful proxy for the commercial demand and competition around that topic.
