AI Overview

AI Overview is an AI-generated summary answer that Google displays at the very top of the search engine results page (SERP), powered by its Gemini model. When a user enters a search query, AI Overview synthesizes information from multiple web sources into a single summary response. Since its official launch in May 2024, it has been expanding rapidly.

Why It Matters

AI Overview represents a fundamental shift in the search ecosystem. As of February 2026, AI Overview appears for approximately 48% of all tracked queries—a 58% increase from 31% a year earlier. It has expanded to over 200 countries and more than 40 languages, and in certain industries such as healthcare (88%), education (83%), and B2B technology (82%), AI Overview appears for the vast majority of queries.

The most significant concern is the decline in click-through rates (CTR). According to a September 2025 study by Seer Interactive, organic CTR dropped from 1.76% to 0.61%—a 61% plunge—for queries where AI Overview is displayed. Similarweb data shows that zero-click search rates increased from 56% in May 2024 to 69% in May 2025. This directly impacts referral traffic for content creators and publishers.

How AI Overview Works

AI Overview runs on a custom Gemini 2.0 model from Google. The core mechanism is a "query fan-out" technique: when a user enters a search query, the system simultaneously executes multiple searches across related subtopics. It then synthesizes and reasons over the information gathered from each search result to generate a single, structured summary answer. Because it is integrated with Google's core web ranking systems, it can extract relevant information directly from Google's own search index.

How to Get Cited in AI Overview

Research shows that brands cited in AI Overview receive 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks. Key strategies for increasing citation likelihood include:

  • Summary-first structure: Place a 40–70 word summary answering the key question at the top of each piece of content. AI models prioritize content that immediately addresses user intent.
  • Structured data implementation: Pages with JSON-LD schemas such as FAQ, HowTo, and Article have a 60% higher citation probability.
  • E-E-A-T signal reinforcement: Author bios, credentials, links to authoritative sources (.gov, .edu), and up-to-date statistical data citations (3–4 per article recommended) are critical.
  • Page speed optimization: Pages with a First Contentful Paint (FCP) under 0.4 seconds are cited an average of 6.7 times, compared to just 2.1 times for slower pages.

Impact on SEO

The proliferation of AI Overview demands a fundamental rethinking of traditional SEO strategies. According to Pew Research Center, the user click rate drops to 8% when an AI summary is displayed, compared to 15% when it is not—a 46.7% decrease. The learning platform Chegg reported a 49% decline in non-subscriber traffic between 2024 and 2025.

In response, a new optimization paradigm called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is emerging. While traditional SEO focused on ranking at the top of search results, GEO aims to optimize content so that it gets cited in AI-generated answers. Since June 2025, Google Search Console has started including AI Mode data in its performance reports, and tools like Semrush and Ahrefs now offer AI Overview tracking features. Going forward, content strategy will be restructured around AI answer citations and brand visibility rather than simple traffic acquisition.
