Prompt Volume

Prompt Volume is an estimate of how often a specific question or topic is submitted to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Where traditional SEO relied on search volume per keyword to gauge demand, GEO is adopting prompt volume as its demand-side metric.

Why It Matters

As search shifts from typed keywords to natural-language conversation, the way you measure what people ask—and how often—has to change too. Profound's analysis shows that question patterns in AI assistants correlate poorly with Google search patterns: users ask in long, action-oriented sentences like "compare," "find me," and "recommend" instead of keywords. Google search volume alone simply cannot show you the demand happening inside AI assistants. If AI visibility and Share of Model measure the outcome—how often you appear in AI answers—prompt volume is the demand data that tells you which questions to target. It is the starting point of GEO content planning.

How It Is Measured, and the Main Tools

AI platforms do not publish their query logs, so every prompt volume figure is an estimate built from panel and clickstream data.

  • Profound Prompt Volumes: Built on 400M+ anonymized real-user conversations collected from double-opt-in consumer panels, it surfaces question frequency, intent, and trends across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Data refreshes weekly and covers ten countries, including South Korea.
  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: Offers Prompt Tracking for brand visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, along with a clickstream-based Topic Volume metric. Since October 2025, Semrush has weighted its Share of Voice calculation by prompt volume.

The caveat is precision. A figure like "4,820 prompts per month" is a modeled output that could plausibly be half or double the true number, so treat prompt volume as a tool for ranking topics and spotting trends rather than as a literal count. Because many AI questions still mirror underlying keyword demand, the emerging best practice is to run both side by side: search volume for SEO, prompt volume for GEO.
