Without keyword mapping, multiple pages inevitably end up targeting the same keyword, a problem known as keyword cannibalization. When this happens, search engines struggle to determine which page to rank, and all competing pages can lose position. The Keyword Mapping Process
Step 1 — Organize keyword research: Sort keywords by search volume, keyword difficulty, and search intent (informational, navigational, transactional).
Step 2 — Cluster keywords: Group semantically related keywords together. Each cluster defines the topical scope a single page should cover.
Step 3 — Inventory existing pages: List all current URLs and identify which keywords each page already ranks for using Google Search Console or a rank tracker.
Step 4 — Assign keywords: Map each cluster to the most relevant page. Each page gets one primary keyword and several supporting secondary keywords. Clusters with no matching page become content gaps.
Step 5 — Optimize: Use the assigned keywords to update title tags, meta descriptions, H1s, and body content.
Ongoing Maintenance
Keyword mapping is not a one-time task. Update the map as search trends shift and new content is published. Regularly review Google Search Console to check whether pages are ranking for their intended keywords. If a page attracts traffic for unexpected queries, revise the mapping accordingly.
