Why It Matters
Google treats links as votes, and each link transfers some of the source page's authority to the destination. This accumulated flow drives individual page rankings. Ahrefs analysis shows top-ranking pages typically carry 3x more authority than lower-ranked ones, and much of that gap comes from link equity. The winning factor isn't "how many backlinks" — it's "how effectively they flow."
What Affects How Much Equity Transfers
Source page authority: One link from a high-authority page (major media homepage, an aged hub page) outweighs 100 low-authority links.
Topical relevance: Links between topically close pages transfer more equity than unrelated ones.
Number of outgoing links: The more external links on a source page, the less equity each link carries. Two outgoing links pass more per link than ten.
Dofollow vs Nofollow: Traditionally rel="nofollow" didn't pass PageRank. Since 2019, Google treats nofollow as a hint and uses some signals, but dofollow is still the norm.
Link placement: In-content links signal more authority than footer, sidebar, or navigation links.
Anchor text: Natural anchor text containing relevant keywords reinforces the transfer by conveying topical context.
External vs Internal Link Equity
External link equity: Authority from backlinks pointing to your site from other domains. The biggest variable in SEO competition.
Internal link equity: Authority transferred between pages inside the same domain. Many sites obsess over external backlinks and neglect internal linking — even though smart internal link design alone can concentrate existing authority onto the right pages.
Strategies to Preserve Link Equity
Route flow from homepage and hub pages to key landing pages: Deliberately link from your highest-authority pages (usually the homepage) to the pages with the highest conversion value.
Reuse legacy high-authority pages: Old blog posts with strong backlinks can link to new priority pages, "transferring" existing authority forward.
Eliminate redirect chains: 301 redirects pass ~85–99% of equity, but chains compound the loss. Keep redirects direct.
Audit 404 pages: Broken pages with backlinks bleed equity into nothing. Monitor regularly and 301-redirect to meaningful pages.
Minimize unnecessary external links: Every outgoing link is a leak. Keep only the citations you really need.
