Common Types

Auto-generated content: Mass-produced pages created through keyword combinations or automated tools that lack genuine value despite being grammatically correct.

Scraped content: Pages that copy or lightly modify content from other sites without adding original value.

Thin affiliate pages: Affiliate marketing pages that reuse product descriptions without adding unique reviews, comparisons, or insights.

Doorway pages: Near-identical pages targeting different keywords that all redirect to the same destination.

Empty structural pages: Tag pages, empty category pages, or internal search result pages with no substantial content.

How Google Evaluates Thin Content

Word count alone is not the criterion. Google assesses:

  • Does the page satisfy the user's search intent?
  • Does it offer original information or perspective?
  • Does it meet E-E-A-T standards (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)?
  • Does it provide unique value compared to other pages?

How to Fix It

  1. Improve: Add original insights, data, and examples to increase quality
  2. Consolidate: Merge similar thin pages into one comprehensive resource
  3. Noindex: Apply noindex tags to operationally necessary but search-irrelevant pages
  4. Prune: Remove pages beyond improvement and set up 301 redirects to relevant content
