What is RWA?
RWA stands for Real-World Asset referring to the process of digitizing traditional assets such as real estate, equities, government bonds, and commodities using blockchain technology. This process is commonly known as tokenization. Tokenized assets are created and distributed on-chain, helping overcome structural limitations of traditional assets such as illiquidity, limited accessibility, and high transaction costs.
For example high-value real estate can be fractionalized into tokens for micro-investments, while global investors can access these assets without being constrained by time zones or jurisdictional barriers.
Why is RWA Gaining Attention?
Traditionally, accessing global financial markets required complex paperwork, intermediaries, and compliance with jurisdiction-specific regulations. RWA tokenization reduces these barriers, offering a user experience similar to interacting with DeFi protocols or DEXs.
Through non-custodial wallets like Girin Wallet, users can directly hold and manage tokenized real-world assets without opening a traditional account, making on-chain interaction with RWA significantly more accessible.
RWA Use Cases on XRP Ledger
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has recently emerged as a core infrastructure layer for RWA tokenization. According to Messari, over 20 different RWA projects have been integrated on XRPL to date, including tokenized U.S. Treasuries, Brazilian credit instruments, real estate, and short-term debt securities.
Key issuers include Archax, OpenEden, VERT, Ondo Finance, and Ctrl Alt, each bringing different asset types on-chain.
